The Rockport Yacht Club (RYC) Learn to Sail Program is open to new sailors from the age of 8-17 who want to discover how fun it is to sail! This program is focused on having fun while learning the basics of sailing. The program is ten (10) days over a period of three (3) weeks.

Lunch, snacks and water will be provided each day to the students. And all students will receive a Sailing textbook from US Sailing, t-shirt, water bottle and completion certificate.

All students must pass RYC’s swim skills test to participate in the sailing program (to be conducted at the beginning of the program) and wear an approved PFD (life jacket) always when on or near the water. Preferred equipment list to be sent out at a later date.

Some of the things that the students will learn are parts of a sailboat, knot tying, the basics of rigging and de-rigging, capsize recovery, identifying points of sail, wind direction and sail trim and sailing rules of the road. On the water safety is our top priority and practiced at all times. Rockport Yacht Club has club-owned sailboats available for the sailing program students to use. The instructors will be on-the-water providing guidance and safety from a motor-driven safety boat as well as instructors being in place on the docks. Our instructors are enthusiastic, highly experienced sailors who have many years of experience running youth programs. Safe boating and safe behavior at the Club is the top priority of all concerned. Our classes are relatively small (8-10 students) to provide proper instruction to the young sailors.

During the program, the students will have an opportunity to crew on the RYC’s Harbor 20 Sailboat, “Heidi”, where they will learn how it differs from the dinghies they will be using in the program.
